The secret
Traditional sambal leans on belacan — fermented shrimp paste — for its savoury depth. We rebuild that umami entirely from plants.
Our house-made vegan belacan starts from mushroom stem, layered with torch ginger flower, kaffir lime leaf and fragrant bay leaf. It tastes like the sambal you grew up with, with nothing from the sea.
Our Craft
Sambal is Malaysia's national comfort food. We set out to capture that fragrant, fiery flavour without a trace of shrimp paste or animal ingredients — so vegetarians never miss out.
The secret is in the aromatics. We fold together rarely-used spices like bay leaf and torch ginger flower with a house-made vegan belacan and mushroom stem — a sambal with a uniquely deep, layered fragrance, good enough to make plain rice a whole meal.

Yes. Every Simple Vege product is 100% plant-based. Instead of shrimp paste (belacan), we use a house-made vegan belacan built from mushroom stem — the same deep umami sambal flavour with no seafood or animal ingredients.
No. Our sambals and pastes are made without onion and garlic (allium-free), so they suit Buddhist vegetarians (纯素 / 五辛素) who avoid the five pungent spices.
